On March 5, Ms. Padilla held her VYBE club meeting in her classroom during flex at Rocklin High School. The goal of the club is to crochet and knit to create things such as blankets, hats, and other items. After they create their masterpieces, they give them to cancer patients as an act of community service.
The club’s president, Izzy Penden, is dedicated to improving the club and creating more projects and events for the club’s members. She tells us why it is so special to her, “The community gives so much to us, so it’s only fair that we give a lot back to them, and by doing this, it’s our way of saying thank you for everything that they’ve done for us.” The president and its members make hats, toys, blankets for wildfires to help the community. Starlight.org says that, “The comfort and joy children receive from these gifts give them a sense of normalcy and celebration, turning a challenging time into one filled with laughter and play.” A fellow club member agrees, Nu Hahamid has been a member for two years. Though they are there for learning and self-improvement, the ability to help give out their work is rewarding. “What’s warmer than a nice, cozy hat to, you know, comfort someone when they’re going through a hard time.”
