On Friday evening and early Saturday morning, the northern lights were faintly visible above Rocklin, Calif. Rather than the dancing ribbons of blue and green seen at higher latitudes, here the space weather phenomena manifested itself as hazy streaks of red in the night sky with tinges of green on the horizon.
The atmospheric light show was the result of the first extreme (G5) geomagnetic storm since 2003, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Photos shared on social media show the aurora visible as far south as Florida.
While the colors were difficult to see clearly with the naked eye, a smartphone or other camera could be used to capture them in their full vividness.
