Zombies are usually regarded as being an overused element in a horror story. However, there is one show that has people that aren’t even into zombie stories raving.

AMC’s The Walking Dead was originally based off of the comics by Robert Kirkman, following a cop named Rick Grimes as he attempts to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. The show is currently on its fifth season and just had its mid-season premiere on Sunday, February 9th and has started to follow its own path, straying from the comics.

This episode, titled “What Happened and What’s Going On”, came as a shock for most fans, confusing them as executive producer Greg Nicotero and show-runner Scott M. Gimple pulled at their heartstrings. The beginning of the episode showed random snippets of later scenes in the episode, including pictures of the character Noah’s siblings, a sun drawn from chalk, and a small drawing of a house, which blood ends up falling onto.

This is not what most fans expected from the beginning of this episode and it was beautifully well done. It shows scenes from what appears to be a funeral for Beth, as she was shot in the head during the mid-season finale. By the end of the episode, however, viewers find out that this funeral isn’t for Beth.

During the episode, Rick, Michonne, Noah, Glenn, and Tyreese all head out to Noah’s old neighborhood to see if there’s anyone left. When they arrive, the streets are in ruins and they are the only living people there. They split up, Tyreese and Noah going to Noah’s house and the other four going to find supplies. While Tyreese and Noah are in his house, Tyreese gets caught by a walker and gets bit in the arm. Noah runs off to get the others.

While Noah is gone, Tyreese experiences hallucinations from blood loss. He sees characters that have died in previous seasons, like the Governor, Martin the cannibal, Beth, Bob and Lizzy and her sister. While Rick and the others are able to amputate Tyreese’s arm, it’s still too late, the funeral was for him.

The episode, overall, was an excellent way to bring back the season. It was beautifully executed and kept whomever was watching on the edge of their seat. The hallucinations Tyreese had were powerfully illustrated and it was one of the most effective deaths on the show. It was extremely heart wrenching and a fantastic comeback. The rest of season five, if it’s anything like this episode, is bound to be amazing.
