When I first walked into the Bird Shop, I was surprised by the sheer amount of items and birds packed in the small store. I expected it to be run down and not be well stocked since I’ve never seen an advertisement for it. At first glance, it may seem like a small, hole-in-the-wall store, but it’s a perfect example of why you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. The Bird Shop is located at 5005 Foothills Blvd, Suite 1B, in Roseville. Inside, there are birds in one corner and a wide selection of toys, foods and supplies needed for your bird. For the look of the store, I give it 5 out of 5 stars.
The staff may be quiet, but they are knowledgeable and quick to help with any questions. Despite its size, the shop is well stocked and has a trustworthy reputation for bird care.
Beyond selling birds, toys and food, The Bird Shop also offers grooming services for birds of all sizes. Services such as wing, beak and nail trimming ranging from $5 to $15, they even offer mobile grooming starting at $50. According to All Things Birds, “While birds can perform some grooming themselves, they do need occasional assistance from their owners” so having a convenient and reliable place is a big advantage for bird owners.
They also have a variety of handfed, healthy birds available. The staff is well-informed about each bird sold, and can tell you what cage size and proper care for birds. While having hand-fed birds isn’t necessary and you could easily buy one from a large retailer, the extra care given by the staff makes the bird become more sociable and it’s easier to bond with them. For bird selection and care, the Bird Shop receives another 5 stars.
There is an abundance of toys. That being said, it is important to be mindful of what toys you are choosing. Some of the bird toys have small nylon ropes and according to Tassie Bird and Poultry Supplies, “Nylon blend ropes should never be used as they can result in serious injury and cuts due to the strength of the strands if the birds get caught in it.” On the food side, the variety is excellent and in my expierence, I buy the Harrisons Bird Food pellets and they are cheaper at the Bird Shop than on Amazon. Regularly switching out the toys in your bird’s enclosure keeps them happy by stimulating their brain and the Bird Shop has an abundance of toys that are available fast. Overall, there are some toys you should look out for, but it is a good place to go for essentials and enrichment 4 out of 5 stars.
Once a year, the shop hosts a bird expo, which really brings the bird community together. During the event, most of the toys are on sale, and many exotic birds are brought in to admire. There are even opportunities to win toys for your bird. While the timing of the next 2026 is uncertain, local bird clubs may have more information. This event was very memorable, and I give it 5 out of 5 stars.
All in all, the Bird Shop is a hidden gem. With the combination of services and knowledgeable staff, it’s an excellent source for both new and experienced bird owners. I give the shop 5 out of 5 stars.
