Rocklin Sports Updates

VARSITY FOOTBALL

League Record: 1-0

Overall Record: 4-1

Last Week: Rocklin won against Nevada Union. 48-35.

This Week: Rocklin is playing against no one.

Bright Spots: Brenden Rakela made three touchdowns, including an 80 yard touchdown. Off of a kick off Nevada Union attempts to return, but Rocklin causes a fumble and recovers which leads to another touchdown.

They said it: “Brenden Rakela, number 2, struggled at the start of the season and this last game he really proved his point and did good!” (Brian Horn).

JV FOOTBALL

Overall Record:  3-1

This Week : Beat Nevada Union 34 – 7

Bright Spots : Christian Awwad returned from kick off. Nate Triebess got multiple touchdowns. During the 3rd quarter Tanner Gomes made a touchdown.

Overall Record: 0-0

Last Week: rocklin won against nevada union 48-35.

This Week: Biweek.

Bright Spots: The cheer team did great, but was not able to perform due to Nevada Unions homecoming.

JV CHEER

Last Week: JV Cheer cheers on JV FB @ Nevada Union for a win of 34-7.

This Week: JV Cheer will begin to work on their rally routine for Homecoming, and work with Frosh and Varsity Cheer for their Homecoming halftime. JV Cheer & FB are on Bye Week for 9/30.

Bright Spots: After the unfortunate event of the shoulder sit falling the week before, the whole routine hit and was a comeback from the week before.

They Said It: “It was really cool that we got to travel all the way to Nevada Union as cheer. We did good for our sideline cheers even though we only have 11 people. We hit all our more difficult stunts for our halftime. I was excited to cheer at a game that finally had cooler weather that fit the fall season sport, which is one of my favorite parts about Football besides Football itself obviously.” (Mariah Wayne).

Varsity TENNIS

Last Week: Vs  River City W (didn’t know score)

This Week: Vs  Oak Ridge

Bright Spots: Varsity Tennis had a match on September 16th which they won. Anabelle Tombo stated that she likes the team bonding so far and meeting new people that joined tennis this year.

They said it:: “In the River City game we lacked the communication part of the game. Even though we won I still feel that we need to work on communication. My goals for the Oak Ridge game is to work with my doubles teammate.” (Anabelle Tombo)

JV TENNIS

Last Week: No JV matches

This Week: vs. Bella Vista (9/20)

Bright Spots: Allison Maranta just got off of crutches on September 18th. She has been on crutches for around five weeks and is excited to be back on the court. Emelyn Dizon said one of the hardest parts of playing doubles is knowing how to work well with her partner on the court. In the last game Emelyn played, she played doubles with a new partner and they worked well together during the match. If you’re playing with a partner, she stated that it is the best if you know how to work together.The best part of playing for Emelyn was having fun. Winning or losing she states it is a fun way to bond and make memories with your team.

They said it:: “The most difficult part of playing tennis is not getting down on yourself because it’s only you on the court so you don’t have many teammates to support you” (Allison Maranta). “During tennis matches it is cool to see our teammates  playing and working together it is very nice and good to see. Even if we lose it is a good learning and bonding experience for the team “(Emelyn Dizon).

Varsity Water Polo

Boys:

League Record:1-1

Overall Record: 3-1 (Including Tournaments 7-2)

Last Week: Lost to Granite Bay last Thursday 17-3, and placed 2nd in Sierra Shootout Tournament with a record of 4-1.

This Week: Defeated Nevada Union at NU 15-11 on Wednesday, 9/21

Girls:

League Record:1-1

Overall Record: 2-2 (including tournament 5-4)

Last Week: The girls played their first league game against Granite Bay but lost 7-3. In the Sierra Shootout tournament, their overall record was 3-2 and they placed 4th

This Week: Defeated Nevada Union 11-7 on Wednesday, 9/21

Bright Spots: Maciel Hay, the team’s driver, had a great game with a couple goals and created assists for her fellow teammates

They Said It: “Although we had an overall good game, we forgot to bring the girl’s water polo balls to practice with so we had to use the boy’s which are much bigger which was different, but it didn’t seem to phase us” – Angeline Calzada

Injury Report: Margaret Sackinsky, one of the team’s two captains has a shoulder injury and did not play against Nevada Union.

JV Girls Volleyball

Overall Record: 8-2

Last Week: Defeated Folsom 25-19, 25-27 and 15-11 on 9/19. Beat Granite Bay 25-13, 21-25 and 15-5 on 9/21. Placed 6th in OPEN tournament on 9/29.

This Week:  Nevada Union tonight. El Camino Fundamental High school 9/28. Pleasant Grove High School 9/29.

Bright Spots: On 9/21, Emily Jagerhorn had great hits and served the team to victory. Additionally, Summer Frank was great at the net, with multiple blocks.

They said it: “[I recently got injured] so sitting on the side is really hard because I am seeing people out on the court having fun. And also I can see what our team needs to be doing on the court that we are not doing.” Mary Beth Nolan.

Overall Record: 10-1

Last Week:  Vs. Folsom 2-0 win, Vs. Granite Bay win 2-1

Bright Spots: Abby Mangelsdorf did a really great job playing outside as well as Gracie Adams who did a fantastic job of communicating to her team mates.

Dance Team

Last Week: The dance team did not perform last Friday as football had an away game against Nevada Union.

This Week: The dance team will not be performing this Friday because football has a by

Bright Spots:The RHS dance team learned their board game-themed homecoming rally routine last week and is working to perfect it by the performance.

They Said It: Andrea Valentini said that on Friday, because there was no home football game, she was “going to a birthday dinner with my friend and seeing a movie with friends afterwards.”

CROSS COUNTRY

Last Week: Last week they had the first league meet of the 2016/2017 season in Willow Hills, Folsom. Last Friday, September 23rd, they had the Annual Jog-a-thon at the RHS stadium. Saturday September 24th varsity had the Stanford Invite in Palo Alto.

This Week: Wednesday September 28th, all teams are participating in their second league meet of the season at Nevada Union High School starting at 4:00pm. Saturday October 1st all teams are headed to Haggin Oaks for Capital Classic, times have not yet been announced.

Bright Spots: This week the team did conditioning to prep for their Jog-a-thon. The team was excited to run with their cross town rivals. The team was looking forward to being able to see their friends on the opposing teams. The runners explained how they ran two miles each day to prepare for the fundraiser. The team said throughout the week they did difficult conditioning. Rocklin Cross Country had so much fun raising money for their team!

They said it: “I had a lot of fun at the Jog-a-thon because we got to bond with the other team and there was a lot of different fun activities and there was a lot of food.” -Jacob P

Varsity Girls Golf

This week: This week Varsity Girls Golf have a game at Folsom on Tuesday (9/20) at 5:30.

There is a game on Wednesday (9/21) against Woodcreek as well as one on Thursday (9/22) against Granite Bay.

Last week: Last week they played Del Oro on Tuesday (9/13), resulting in a win with a score of 242-245.

Bright spot: Ellie Gordon shot 34, Lauren Miller shot 40 and Lorin Millard shot 48, all personal best scores.

They said it: “The team we want to beat this year is Granite bay,” says Mr. Shields.

JV Girls Golf

This week: JV remains undefeated.

Last week: On Thursday (9/22) they beat

Roseville with a 291-304 win.

Bright spot: Maddy Davis shot a 53 and JV remains undefeated.
