Are the most popular drinks really that good? Right now all the buzz going around are energy drinks. Abby Jessup and Annabella Bonham both were influenced by the people around them and they both wanted to try energy drinks because of that peer factor. Avery Saunders was influenced by people telling her they gave them energy. Jessup continues to drink them because, ¨I like them because they don’t have as much sugar in them as other energy drinks.¨ Bonham agrees ,¨I like them, and they taste really good, and I have a little bit of a caffeine addiction.¨ Saunders has a very similar reason to Bonham. ¨When I’m tired, they give me energy. And I think that they’re very tasty…¨
Even though teens love the energy rush that these drinks provide, the research shows they are not good for students. Realsimple states, ¨Many energy drinks contain numerous ingredients that either have not been studied or evaluated in combination with other nutrients contained in the drink¨ Energy drink brands like Red-bull or Alani know that alot of their ingrentints aren’t studie yet still sell them. Cleveland Clinic states, ¨Drinking them regularly can increase your risk of adverse health effects especially if you have an existing medical condition.¨ There’s not only one problem with energy drinks, there are multiple. Examples like, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, mood swings, stroke and many more things.
So what are healthier options? Well, coffee is actually better for you than energy drinks. Coffee can decrease risk of cancer and liver disease. Green tea is also great! Just like coffee, green tea can also lower chances of cancer and liver disease as well as lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Another great option is coconut water. Coconut water has antioxidants and electrolytes making it way healthier. One drink that is simply the best you could drink is just simply water!
Bonham, Saunders and Jessup all state that they know there are healthier options but they overall choose energy drinks. Saunder states that some people do understand that there are healthier options but, ¨They become [a lot more popular because they have] more flavors, and choosing which one you want to drink every day is very exciting, and coffee is not very good.¨
