On November 2, members of the Latin Heritage Club (LHC) at RHS volunteered at the second annual Día de los Muertos festival at Vernon Street Town Square in Roseville. From 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., they worked with the Latino Leadership Council (LLC) to manage the festival, which included dances, clothing and accessory vendors, small businesses, music, and food trucks.
Senior Alisa Flores and junior Brandon Yax are two youth ambassadors of the LLC, so they were able to help before the event by having the LHC create paper flowers from August to October. “We began preparing almost in July, but definitely we started ramping up the progress in August,” Flores said. Yax said he and Flores spent “at least 48 hours” total preparing with the LLC and LHC.
Flores said that this year’s festival was “much bigger” than last year’s. Now that the festival got recognition, more people came to see what the LLC put forth for people. For Yax, the festival was a success because “many people who came enjoyed the festival.” The purpose of it was to present, share, and preserve Latin culture. That was the best part for him. “Preserving our traditions is important for us,” he said.
