This year, Rocklin High School had multiple new additions to its staff. One notable member is the new 10th grade Language Arts teacher, Ms. Chelsea Black. She has quickly become accustomed to Rocklin, despite the fact that she has only been here for a few months.

This is not her first year teaching; Ms.Black used to teach in the Bay Area, but recently families have been moving away. The increase of people who are moving out of the Bay Area is causing lower enrollment and lower pay for teachers.

“I wanted a change, I wanted to live in a less expensive place with less traffic.” Ms. Black says.

Unlike most people, Ms. Black knew exactly what she wanted to do in college. During this time, she got an opportunity to be a TA, which really inspired her future career as a teacher. Ms. Black loves English, and being an English teacher has been her dream job for six years.

“So for birthdays, I bring this instrument in, called melodica, and I play a song for my students,” she says.

For students’ birthdays, Ms. Black plays a theme song from the popular television show, “The Office,” on her melodica. Melodica is a musical keyboard and is played by blowing air through a mouthpiece that fits into a hole in the side of the instrument.

Ms. Black is happy about the decision she made to move to Rocklin. She loves the area and our school. She says that the students are really kind and friendly, which makes her like the school and her job even more.
