A student threatened violence at Spring View Middle School on TikTok Friday, Rocklin police said. After contacting the student and investigating, they deemed the threat non-credible.
The school notified parents of the social media post and the determination that there was “no active threat” at 9:07 a.m., but the incident caused panic among students. Several parents chose to pick up their kids from school early.
Spring View parent Vivian Fullbright said that she received a text from her son that there was a shooter on campus during lunch.
“I freaked out,” she said.
She started driving to the school immediately and texted her son back. He didn’t respond. When she arrived, she saw other parents there to pick up their kids.
“I felt comfortable knowing that there were all these people there, knowing that most likely it was just a misunderstanding,” she said.
The school had told parents earlier in the day that they could pick up their kids if they didn’t feel comfortable and allowed students to use their phones to contact their parents, Fullbright said.
Fullbright’s son said that rumors had been circulating among students that there was a student with a gun on campus. He texted his mom just before students were instructed to go inside after lunch.
“Everyone was like, let’s just hide under the desks if something goes wrong or stuff like that,” he said. “Everyone was just scared.”
The incident was part of a social media trend on various platforms of threatening violence at schools across the nation. Rocklin police said they will continue to monitor social media and investigate threats in the area.
