“Twisters” is a new standalone sequel that takes place in the same universe as the 1996 original “Twisters” movie. “Twisters” hit theaters July 19, starring Daisy Edgar Jones as Kate Carter, a young woman getting herself back out as a storm chaser after traumatic loss when she encountered an EF5 tornado.
“It had me on the edge of my seat. I never knew what was going to happen,” said RHS senior Isabel Cavenecia.
The movie begins with Kate Carter and her friends chasing a tornado but they soon realized the tornado was too dangerous and tried to escape it. However, it ended up a harrowing day that traumatized Kate.
The film had 10 tornadoes created using CGI. “It did not even occur to me that they were using CGI, it was so good,” said Cavenecia. The SFX supervisor for the movie had purchased two powerful jet engines that could create winds going from 170 to 180 mph.
“I liked that the two main characters who seemed to be love interests didn’t kiss, because it didn’t turn into a love story and it was just action all the way through,” Cavenecia said. During the beginning of the movie, main character Kate Carter shows that she’s still recovering from the memories of her past love and is continuing on carrying her trauma until the end of the movie. In the end, Kate overcomes her fear of tornadoes by using the technology she made and continues her life as a storm chaser.
The side character Javi (Anthony Ramos) had the best character development in the entire movie. His performance stood out more than the main cast and his acting was surreal. In the movie Kate can somewhat “sense” where a tornado will appear and how it will behave and she uses this talent many times throughout the film. The movie plot was in some degree confusing — it felt like many different ideas were being thrown and became hard to follow at times.
“I wouldn’t change anything. It was a good film,” said Cavenecia. This disaster flick was highly rated with a 75% of Rotten Tomatoes and an overall score of 4.0 out of 5 stars. If you like action movies with a bit of thrill then this movie is a must-watch.
