Wickedly Entertaining

“John Wick: Chapter 2” burns bright with successful release

He killed three men in a bar with a pencil. He’s the person you send to kill the boogeyman. He is John Wick.

The first “John Wick” movie was released in 2014, to critical acclaim. It performed decently at the box office, but not overtly well. What the first movie did was, however, important for the second – it generated hype.

The first “John Wick” was something of a risk – much like “Taken”, it cast an older actor in a desperate, bloody action movie. It worked spectacularly, which excited many for a possible sequel (including myself), and gave Keanu Reeves’ career a bit of a boost.

“John Wick: Chapter 2” was released to theaters on Feb. 10. I knew what to expect – insane action sequences separated by a vague fleshing-out of the strange criminal underworld that Reeves’ character lives in.

Which is what I got. I loved every single second of it.

“Chapter 2” is insane, bloody fun. The film improves upon the first one while retaining what made the first one great. The action sequences look great, taking place in beautiful locations that really enhance the violence visually. For instance, a shootout takes place at an outdoor concert, with lasers and lights shooting everywhere along with the bullets and blood splatters.

Another shootout takes place in an art museum, which explains itself. The film looks amazing, the fight sequences are brilliantly choreographed.

Reeves also makes the most of his minimal dialogue. Wick is a character very similar to Neo, Reeves’ most famous role, which helps him tremendously. For some strange reason, there is almost nothing more entertaining than giving Keanu Reeves a gun and some karate moves and watching him tear through bad guys. He’s just so good at it.

So the movie looks great, is entertaining and makes improvements on the first. It’s incredible. Go see it. There’s nothing else left to do.

…Except wait for “John Wick: Chapter 3”.
