“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.”

These words spoken by Plato rang true during the RHS Winter Instrumental Concert, which featured jazz band, concert band, symphonic band, a guitar trio, orchestra, a cello quartet and symphonic orchestra.

The show started off with the jazz band playing smooth and beautiful pieces, and it was a great way to kick off the show. And it only got better from this point on. All but two groups performed Christmas pieces in order to honor the upcoming holiday, while also showcasing something unique to RHS.

The first of these was the Guitar Trio, a group of three boys – junior Isaiah Scholl, freshman Ethan Stanley and sophomore Kian Shahi – two on guitar and one on piano, playing a piece called 11:11. This piece was absolutely incredible to listen to, and was a nice twist to the classical vibe of most performances.

The other was a Cello Quartet, arranged by senior McKenna Crowe, where cellists McKenna Crowe, sophomore Kamelia Varasteh, junior Owen Chambers and senior Tyra Day played “Colors of the Wind” from the Disney movie Pocahontas. This was truly lovely to hear and provided the opportunity for the full and rich tone of the cello to shine.

All in all, the bands, Guitar Trio and Cello Quartet included, played wonderfully. There was a mix of excitement, a feeling of smoothness and an allure that made you want more of the music. It left you not wanting the concert to end, but, of course, everything must come to an end.
