After months of anticipation and excitement, Marvel Entertainment finally released their newest Netflix series, Luke Cage, on Sept. 30. This came out months after Marvel’s other Netflix show, Daredevil, released season 2.

Fans of Marvel Entertainment are very familiar with Luke Cage, or Power Man, as he’s referred to in the comics, along with most of the characters that show up in the new show. Luke is best known to be one of Marvel’s first African American superheroes, and as a member of the Defenders team, which includes Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Iron Fist. Luke’s power is super strength as well as bullet proof skin.

This isn’t the first time fans have seen Luke in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Luke is introduced as a side character helping Jessica out midway through the season.

Luke Cage, subsequent to Jessica Jones, starts off with Luke broke, working two jobs and just trying to live a normal life, even though he was given the power of super strength while serving time in Seagate Prison.

His day job involves him working at a barber shop run by a man known as Pop. At night, Luke is found to be working at Harlem’s Paradise for Cornell Stokes, or more commonly known as Cottonmouth, an infamous gang leader that is looking to become the king of Harlem, alongside his cousin, councilwoman Mariah Dillard.

During this time, Cottonmouth’s men had been making a deal to get new, special guns, are shot and killed, while two of the three that took their money flee the scene. This is when detective Misty Knight and her partner, Rafael Scarfe, are put on the case.

All in all, this show was amazing. The cinematography was incredible and the actors did a fantastic job. It’s no surprise that we’ll be seeing most of these characters again; they all performed beautifully and are masters of their craft.

However, Marvel can’t always be perfect, as some might believe. The show was dark and wasn’t something for the faint of heart to watch like Marvel’s other two Netflix series, Jessica Jones and Daredevil. The amount of swearing and, sometimes, gore would be a lot for a casual Marvel fan that normally wouldn’t watch something like this.

While these all might be true, Marvel’s Luke Cage was amazing, even through some of its flaws. The good outweighs the bad and if you’re alright with some gore and swearing, it’s worth watching.

Luckily, we’ll see Luke Cage again in 2017, when Marvel’s show, Defenders, comes out, featuring all of the leads we’ve seen now, alongside Iron Fist, who is also getting his own show in 2017. As for season 2, we’re going to have to wait awhile for it to come back. Marvel has said that they plan to only release two series per year.

However, it’s worth the wait. And, while we’re all waiting for Marvel’s newest Netflix shows, it’s never too late to get caught up and watch all of Luke Cage.
