Feminists Gain Support
Recently women have taken a stand on the inequality of gender based issues, some even going on strikes and quitting their jobs to pursue what they believe in: fair treatment beyond genders.
Feminist’s primary focus is to promote women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.
As stated on pay-equity.org, “although the gender wage gap narrowed slightly in 2013, it still remains statistically unchanged. Women’s earnings were 78.3 percent of men’s in 2013.”
In America, feminism has become a topic of discussion between all ages. With many social media accounts and protests, students have become more aware of the issues between genders and have become increasingly opinionated.
“Growing up throughout life I have seen inequality on ads, social media, and the news. I knew it wasn’t right and as I grew older I grew into being a feminist after seeing more dominant issues, which really inspired me,” says junior Malu Kineret.
The feminist community has grown and begins to continue growing with the large numbers of growing believers and promoters.
“I am inspired by Beyonce. Most celebrities are famous for no reason, but she has strong views on equal society, which she promotes through her work,” adds Malu.
The issue is trending worldwide, impacting women and men from sea to sea. The strikes cause chaos in the cities, and affect the surrounding people. The feminist community also reacts to current events and will revolt against unfair treatment.
The Bill Cosby fiasco aggravated many feminists, especially in the streets of Barcelona. Women organized a massive strike, shutting down traffic, and writing feminist slogans over the walls of the populated city.
Hello Kitty, the most famous cat in the world, may be interpreted in a negative view of women in Japanese culture. The wildly famous toy is not actually a cat, but a girl. The toy is made to resemble a cat to attract different ages and variations of interests.
In Japan women have close to no rights in the workplace or home. Hello Kitty has no mouth as evidence of the inequality of gender in Japan.
This recent uproar of discussion is a mix of opinions and fact. While conversing the topic, people who are not feminists will mostly listen and discuss, as it exposes them to self-identified feminists and their views of the trending topic. Although, non-feminists also have strong opinions on the issue too.
As stated on Feminism Wikipedia, Roy Baumeister criticizes feminists who “look only at the top of society and draw conclusions about society as a whole. Yes, there are mostly men at the top. But if you look at the bottom, really at the bottom, you’ll find mostly men there, too.”
Sophomore Trevor Barnes says, “Sometimes I find feminists annoying because they are more on the scale of extremists. Women will believe it is them against the world, but they have it pretty good.”
Although people have different views of the topic, feminists remain standing their ground in their strong beliefs. They aim for equality beyond men and women in the workplace and social and economic ways.

The Bill Cosby “fiasco” has literally nothing to do with equal rights. I find it interesting that it was included in this article.
