Foreign Language Department Says Adiós to AP Spanish
AP Spanish, a course notorious for having one of the hardest AP tests in the spring, will not be offered as a class next school year. In years past, the class size has been shrinking, and only about 10 students want to take the class in the 2014-2015 school year. Instead, it will be offered as an independent study course.
“There is a minimum amount of students needed in order for the school to offer the class. Under 10 people isn’t enough to field a class,” Said AP Spanish teacher Mrs. DeMeyer.
Riley Hensley, a sophomore in Spanish 3 honors, was eager to take AP Spanish next year.
“I want to Take AP Spanish in order to become stronger in the language. When I’m older I want to be a Spanish teacher, so this would be the perfect class to help me get prepared for the future Spanish classes that I plan on taking in college,” said Hensley.
On the other hand, a majority of students in their third year of Spanish, whether it be regular 3 or 3 honors, have no desire to take AP Spanish. The class’ reputation of being taught bell to bell exclusively in Spanish, has turned off students. They would prefer there be a Spanish 4 honors instead of AP Spanish.
If there would be a Spanish 4 honors course available next year, that would be the only spanish 4 class offered, thus eliminating regular spanish 4.
“I prefer Spanish 4 honors over AP Spanish because its still a weighted class, just not as challenging as AP would be, ” said Connor Gohl.
As the foreign language department eliminates AP spanish from next years schedule, its easy to say few will be heart broken. In the end, students still have the possibility to challenge themselves by taking the honors course.
