RHS girls’ soccer had a season to remember, winning their first section title in 25 years. Even though their playoff run ended earlier than they wanted it to in the First round of Norcals, the team still sees the season as a success. “It’s a crummy way to end, but we had a fantastic season — one that we’re all going to remember for a long time,” head coach Jeffery Barnette said. “Getting a blue banner is always a nice commodity. I just applaud the girls.” The section championship game went into overtime, making the win even more exciting. “As soon as that final whistle blew, everyone was just so excited,” Barnette said. “Winning it in overtime is just crazy. I honestly can’t put it into words. I was just so thrilled that we could come out with the W and return the favor to Granite Bay after they knocked us out last year.” Even though they lost in the next round, the team is still proud of what they did. “It’s always tough to lose, but what these girls did this year was special,” Barnette said. “They worked hard, played for each other, and proved that RHS soccer is a force to be reckoned with.” With key players returning and a new batch of players coming in over the off-season, RHS is already thinking about next season. “It’s time to run it back,” Barnette said. “We’re going to miss our seniors, but we got some quality players returning. We’ll be ready.” The girls know it won’t be easy, but they’re determined to make another deep run towards the playoffs. With a strong group of returning players and momentum from this year’s success, they’ll enter next season with high expectations. For now, they’ll take time to reflect on their historic accomplishment before shifting their focus to the work ahead.
