RHS students with a GPA of 3.0 or above were celebrated in the amphitheater during lunch Thursday. Those students received a candy bar and a pin from ASB.
Laura Douglas, history teacher and an advisor for campus recognition, worked hard with ASB to set everything up for that day. She said the whole process takes a few months.
“We have to make all the posters with everybody’s names on them,” she said.
Ms. Douglas and the ASB members come to school at 7 a.m. to “put all the posters out.”
“In the mornings, I get to see students arrive on campus and they look for their names,” she said. “Kids are taking pictures of their names. So it’s pretty cool”
The event happens once a semester. Senior Christopher Mendez said it makes him feel “appreciated a little bit more.”
Sophomore Axell Gaines agreed. “I wasn’t expecting it, but honestly, it was something I was gonna be looking forward to,” he said.
The main reason why many students strive for a high GPA is not because of events like these but because of college. Junior Jelena Goldberg said, “My college life is important to me, and I want to achieve a good GPA to ensure a good college.”
The same is true for Mendez, but the event was still “a pleasant surprise,” he said.
