Once on This Island Review
Was the Confusion worth it?
February 12, 2019
This month Rocklin High School produced the winter musical, “Once on This Island”. This musical tells the story of Ti Moune, a girl from a small island who falls in love with a man from a higher social class.
Rocklin’s latest production featured a number of entertaining characters, songs and dances, but the confusing plot line may have outshined all the positive aspects.
One of the hardest things to understand during the show is the fact that they use the same actors for different characters. Several of the characters in the musical are supposed to portray a family telling a scared child the story of Ti Moune, but when those same characters switch roles within a matter of seconds, it leaves you wondering where one story ends and another one begins.
Little details can make a big difference in the audience’s understanding of the plot, and this musical left little holes of missing information that made the plot make sense.
Although you knew they were on an island, you had no knowledge of their surroundings, how they lived, how they were able to travel, or where the “privileged people” lived. All the audience understood was that the poor lived on an island, and the rich people lived in a castle. This made it hard to relate to the story, leaving you hung up on the little things.
For those who like a happy ending, this may not be a musical you want to see. The audience was left disappointed when the love story didn’t turn out the way they expected it to.
Despite there being certain flaws, the entire cast of Once on This Island performed their absolute best, and brought entertainment, life and excitement to their characters. For musical lovers who are more interested in the entertainment rather than the plot line, then this would be a perfect way to spend their night.
