The World’s Most Liked Egg

Instagram photo shatters world record

One may think that in order to be the most liked instagram post in the world, the post would have to be full of excitement, mystique, drama or anything that caused people to, well, like it. But this last Sunday the 13th, one egg proved this statement to be dead wrong.

On February 6 2018, Kylie Jenner posted a photo on instagram revealing the birth of her baby girl, and it took the world by storm(i). This photo skyrocketed in likes, all the way up to becoming the most liked photo on the entire instagram platform. And its reign lasted a long time- almost an entire year. Almost, because as of this aforementioned egg.

Posted by the account @world_record_egg, a picture of a regular old egg was uploaded to instagram on January 4 with the caption “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this.”

This post didn’t just beat the world record. It absolutely shattered it, with already over 45 million likes as of Wednesday. People all around the world have joined together in the #EggGang to be a part of this new world record.

The New York Times did an article about this strange egg and put it into perspective by saying “If everyone who liked the photo created a new city, it would be the world’s second-largest, beating Shanghai. The egg’s fans have passed the population of Australia.

The people behind the post are still unknown, as well as the motivation for posting an egg, but as described by the New York Times, that the posting account was “hinting at a mysterious Phase 2 of the egg plan, and wrote on Instagram that “it doesn’t end here,” and that “we’re only just getting started.”

Kylie Jenner had her fun with this whole affair as well, posting a video of herself cracking an egg on hot pavement with the caption “Take that little egg.” Her baby reveal picture has been bombarded by comments of egg emojis and people mocking her that the egg team “won” the fight for the most liked picture.

One thing is for sure, this eggcelent post has a new world record.
