One Stroke Away

The golf team narrowly avoided disqualification at Divisionals

One+Stroke+Away

It was the end of the tournament, and the team had no idea they were one stroke away from being disqualified.

Rocklin High School’s varsity golf team placed fourth in their section, but they were lucky to advance past Divisionals.

On October 22, the team went to Divisionals, the qualifying round to be eligible to go to Sectionals. The event began at 9:00 a.m.

About an hour into the tournament, the girls golf coach, Mr. Frank Shields, received a phone call informing him that one of the girls on the team was not academically eligible to play.

If this one girl had shot in the top five on her team, the whole team would have been disqualified and lost their shot at Masters.

Thankfully, by one stroke, she was knocked out of the top five by freshman Jessica Burdick.

The girls on the team had no knowledge of the panic that was happening amongst the coach and other adults involved in the team.

When they found out after, they were shocked and relieved to find that due to Jessica Burdick, they were able to advance further in their golf season.

This one stroke allowed them to play in Sectionals, where they finished in fourth place.
