“I have had some interesting things happen to me while playing sports,” Josh Kelly said, who’s played sports all his life. He’s played basketball, football, and soccer at the competitive level. However, he has multiple stories where things we’re not all good.

Josh states that his dad has “pushed [him], sometimes way to much, sometimes too little, but most of the time its too much,” says Josh.

In the second grade Josh had to run three miles in under 25 minutes. He recalls one “traumatic” incident was when he broke his ankle playing basketball, and had to be put into a cast. The day he got the cast taken off his dad told him to run 5 miles and on that run he broke his ankle again and had to go to the doctor again.

At the age of eight, he had three-hour basketball practices for the Rocklin Roadrunners five days a week, but lost the championship game.

“We were all sad, and this one kid was even crying, and Coach Louie comes up to us and huddles us up as a team. And you have to keep in mind we’re all 8 years old, and he just says ‘You guys ducking suck’, and walks away. But I’ll give you a hint, he didn’t say ducking.”

However, these stories did not come without lessons. Josh says that his loss at the basketball championship helped inspire him to push harder at his other sports like football and soccer. “Even though he pushed me hard,” said Josh, “I think it was necessary.”
