Smart Accessories
This year, the world got one step closer to becoming a sci-fi movie with the introduction of two devices from the first generation of Smart Accessories. Google Glass was released to a limited number of people as a prototype, and Samsung has just announced its Galaxy Gear which will be released in the next month.
Glass is a pair of glasses(well… sort of) with a small display in the top right area of vision. It is largely voice controlled, but also has a simple touchpad on the right side, and can also be controlled with the MyGlass app. Glass features a 5-megapixel camera that is able to capture videos in 720p.
Reviews are mixed. This device is in the first generation of wearable computers, and to most users, that is obvious. In their review, engadget said that it didn’t stay in its proper position, the right side would slowly droop down. This is most likely because the right side has the entire system hanging off of it.
Glass uses WiFi and Bluetooth tethering to connect to your phone or just use WiFi on its own. Engadget says that glass is useful for simple tasks like navigation, simple Google searches, quick pictures or videos, and starting a Google Hangout.
There are, however, some down sides. For one, in my opinion you will look super dumb. The headset doesn’t have lenses, and is basically a thick silver wire across your face with an awkward plastic box on one side.
For those who already wear glasses, Glass fits over your glasses, but won’t be comfortable. There is very little ability to change even simple settings like volume or brightness. The Small glass screen must also be very fragile, Google instructs users not to touch it.
The device is also clumsy and limited in its ability to complete more advanced searches, read and compose messages, the audio capture and voice recognition is sub-par, and the battery life is disappointing. The only comfort is that this is not the final version, and many issue are being addressed.
Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet at their conference in early September, but those devices were overshadowed by the reveal of Samsung’s Galaxy Gear; a “Smartwatch.”
The Gear features a small display on a touchscreen, a 2-megapixel camera, voice controls, and a compatibility system with the two other new devices(which will likely be expanded to other devices).
Again, users can tell that this is first generation technology. It is used mainly as a remote for your phone, more convenient, and hands free(in concept that is). Engadget said that it works well as a remote for music as well as other small convenient tasks, but not much else. Overall its doesn’t seem like it does enough to be worth it.
As the world of technology becomes more and more mobile, these devices will probably not work out for most people. Others, however, might jump at the chance to use this first generation of devices. While smart accessories aren’t my cup of tea, they may grow on me as the technology advances.
