Career Week

What You Need to Know

Career+Week

Emily Hioco

The College and Career Center here at RHS is a great resource for students to expand their knowledge and gain perspective on colleges and careers that may interest them, as well as a meeting place for students to talk face to face with college and career representatives.

To provide even more tools and resources for  students, the College and Career Center has taken on the challenge of offering an entire week of informative and educational opportunities for students. This first ever Career Week will give students a more personalized experience with experts in various fields. Ultimately, providing students with a real life perspective and glimpse into what it would be like to work in one of these fields.

“Making the connections for students’ career paths was identified as a goal for both our district and our site during recent strategic planning. The implementation of this week goes a long way in meeting this goal.” said Ms.Tillery, the director of the College and Career Center.

The goal of Career week is to take the personal interests of the students through an online career survey. Students will then attend presentations on career fields that they are actually interested in.

“We have also tried to place students with at least one speaker that they did not request in hopes that some exploration of careers they haven’t considered will be enlightening.” said Ms.Tillery.

“Students can expect to learn why it is important to start thinking about careers BEFORE they leave high school…They will learn from the four speakers more than just the basics of job title, salary, required schooling, but details such as what type of person might be good for this career, how does this career affect other parts of the speaker’s life, etc.”

Since class time is limited for the speakers, some of them will be available to answer one-on-one questions at the career fair on Friday. The career fair will also be a chance for students to visit with professionals and learn about the careers that they did not hear from in the speaker sessions.

Each RHS student attended the keynote address on Tuesday. Students will then attend 2 sessions each day on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by a culminating “career fair style” assembly in the gym on Friday.

Here are events that every student will take part in during their school day:

  • Tuesday, January 23 – Keynote speaker (Kevin Bracy) from 11:30- 12:45.
  • Wednesday/Thursday, January 24-25 – Approximately 70 career speakers per day will be in place in classrooms throughout campus. Students will be assigned two speaker sessions to attend each day (Wed/Thurs.) during 3rd block- 11:30- 12:45.
  • Friday, January 26 – Students will visit the career fair, watch video, and complete a survey about the week during 3rd block- 10:20-12:45.
