When Does Christmas Really Start?
Getting into the Spirit Early
November 30, 2016
Christmas is one of the most anticipated times of the year, with students ready for the late night car rides through neighborhoods brimming with lights and frosting delicious sugar cookies. This is a time when people are allowed to forget about the constant stressors in their life and relax by the fire.
The question for many students is, how early should we get into the spirit? Some people feel as soon as the weather gets cold it’s time for Christmas sweaters and cups, while others refuse to participate in festivities until December first.
For example, there has been discord among students about the Christmas music being played during lunch.
For some, it is hard to get excited about Christmas before the month of December. They feel that we should focus on one holiday at a time, and not forget about Thanksgiving.
“I’m so angry they are playing Christmas music. I love Christmas, but it is not time yet,” stated senior Alyssa Raleigh.
Others just cannot help themselves when it comes to the idea of Christmas time.
“I must confess I have already started listening to Christmas music in the car, so when it started playing at lunch it just got me more in the spirit,” said junior Owen Chambers.
Or some simply feel Chirstmas should be a year long event.
“I’m the type of person that could literally listen to Christmas music all year long… I mean why not?” admitted junior Sophia Gonzalez.
For several RHS students, their Christmas decorations went up as soon as Thanksgiving was over.
“My mom put up our Christmas decorations over the break, we usually start decorating our house when Thanksgiving is over,” said junior Annemarie Meade.
Putting up Christmas decorations can be very cheerful and often times makes a person feel warm and happy. It can be a delightful way to take a break from reality and enter a magical wonderland in your own home.
“I put up Christmas lights in my room and I could not be more happy about it. It makes me feel warm and cozy,” said junior Miranda Crowley.
One thing we can be sure of is that once the Christmas season is here it is sure to bring lots of joy to our campus. With many more lunches filled with the familiar jolly music, creating lots of anticipation for Winter break.
