Prayers for Pulse

Deadliest mass shooting in Orlando nightclub.

It was a simple summer night in Orlando, but it quickly became a night that would forever be remembered after it took a turn for the worse. On June 12, 2016, a 29 year old man named Omar Mateen posed as a security guard and pledged allegiance to ISIS right before he shot and killed 49 people, wounding 53, inside of a gay nightclub called Pulse. On record, this is the deadliest mass shooting in American history.

This attack quickly spread all over the news, gaining attention from many well-known Americans. President Obama gave a heartwarming speech, addressing the shooting as “an act of terror and an act of hate.” On the other hand, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump had other intentions in mind, as he responded to the shooting by bragging about how he was “right about Islam” all along.

Additionally, numerous famous artists and musicians teamed up to release a tribute song known as “Hands.” It featured many popular singers, such as Britney Spears, Selena Gomez, and Gwen Stefani.

Through this devastating incident, the LGBT community has received support from individuals across the world. Many organizations have also come together to support Orlando, such as Equality Florida’s GoFundMe page, which has already raised over $1.7 million, and the One Orlando Fund, which has raised over $1 million.

The reactions even spread to social media, when users posted pictures and tweets using the hashtag #GaysBreakTheInternet. Shortly after the shooting occurred, people were lined up in thousands ready to donate blood. In fact, so many people offered to donate that the workers had to turn the people around and ask them to return at a later time.

The responses to the attack were definitely not confined to just the United States. Residents of London gathered outside one of its most famous gay bars and held up rainbow flags, balloons, and flowers in honor of the Pulse victims. In France, the Eiffel tower was lit up in rainbow colors and the Paris City Hall was donned in American and rainbow flags.

The Pulse shooting has been the worst mass attack in America’s modern history, and people will forever mourn the innocent victims that were unnecessarily caught in the violence.
