Childhood Favorite: PPG’s Revived

It’s been 11 years, but now the “perfect little girls” are back and “using their ultra super powers”  for “fighting crime and the forces of evil” once again.

The Powerpuff Girls was a cartoon originally created by Craig McCracken that originally aired in 1998. The show remained on-air for seven years on Cartoon Network, and due to its immense popularity, “The Powerpuff Girls Movie” was made in 2002 and its Christmas Special “Twas the Fight Before Christmas” was made in 2003.

The story of the new version is, essentially, the same. The adorable trio of heroines still hand out whollopings to the villains of Townsville all while managing to preserve their childhood.

However, the show can not be truly judged, as there is only one season so far. The first season of the original PPG’s by no means revealed the greatness of the show, and it can be assumed it will be the same with the new one.

From what there is, though, the show has other constants as well. For example, Princess Morebucks is still a character and still trying to connive her way to PPG-dom, and cult favorite Mojojojo appears to be involved. That was to be expected, as that was more or less a prominent part of the original show. But there is a difference between putting twists on old episode plots, and just reusing them.

One of the new episodes revolves around the girls getting into a competition to prove themselves equal in power. This is pretty much the same story of episode 77 (“Nuthin’ Special”) where Buttercup tries to show she is as just as good as her sisters. In the new one, it is Blossom trying to prove herself.

The reboot, however, does have some significant differences in contrast with the original series.

All of the voice actors are different and will sound somewhat annoying if you are used to the old actors. The setting of the show is also much more modern. The girls old beloved hotline has been replaced by numerous cell phones, pad devices, etc. Furthermore, the show itself seems less well developed as far as characters and morals go.

In the end, the original show will remain superior; however, the reboot is somewhat refreshing because of the modern context.
