Athletes balance competition and prom

Juniors involved with spring sports plan for a hectic day tomorrow.

Prom is something students dream of all of their lives. The event is glorified through movies and books; we’re shown this special night (that we’ll supposedly remember forever), where people ask their crushes out, dance and have a good time.

However, many of our students have sport-related obligations to attend to before they can completely focus on prom. For example, our boy’s volleyball team is currently in Las Vegas and swim has a meet on the day of prom. Our school’s volleyball club has a tournament tomorrow, as well.

In fact, our swim team left today after second block to prepare for a swim meet.

Junior Haley Matthews said that the swim meet would be stretching from 8 a.m. to around 2 or 3 p.m. tomorrow.

“I’m kind of stressed out because I don’t really want to go to prom with really gross hair,” she said. “And also, I just want enough time to get ready.”

There may be that complication, but the swim coaches are doing their best to make sure that juniors can leave early so they can get to prom on time.

“But it’s still kind of annoying because swim meets tire you out and I don’t want to be really tired at prom,” Haley said.

Although many sports teams have to stress about meets right before prom, our softball team’s tournament was completely canceled.

“We were supposed to be playing today and yesterday, but since most of our team is made up of juniors and they would be missing it, we canceled,” said junior Julianna Henderson.

Preparations are obviously stressful and some people have been cutting it close.

“[I finished preparing] last night”, Julianna said. “I was getting all of the jewelry and the makeup, and nail polish.”

On a different note, rain has been forecasted for tomorrow. This brings up certain complications, more so for girls than anyone else, what with the makeup and fancy hairstyles.

Make sure to bring an umbrella and waterproof coat for the event and more importantly, have a good time.
