FancY FunneL CakeS: A Local, Sweet Classic
March 11, 2016
Funnel cake. It conjures images of state fairs and carnivals that only come about once or twice a year.
But here in Rocklin at 4800 Granite Dr., this biannual treat can be enjoyed any time of the year. The location is FancY FunneL CakeS, and yes it’s supposed to be capitalized that way.
The spelling of the place’s name should give you an idea of what the place is actually like: a little different, a little weird, but not necessarily bad.
Upon entering, we were greeted by a single, but cheerful employee. He was more than happy to explain the way the menu worked, and mentioned the special they had that day. Every Sunday, each individual funnel cake is buy one get one free.
This is a great deal, especially considering that the price for one cake is pretty steep. A single funnel cake will set you back about $6, or about $8 if you want toppings. However, the funnel cake is eight inches in diameter (easily big enough to feed two) and cheaper than funnel cake found at fairs and carnivals.
We were the only people there at the time, and the wait for our funnel cake was around five or six minutes. For a “snack food” place like this, that is longer than most people would want to wait. So if you go here, know that the wait may be longer than expected, especially if there are more people.
The funnel cake itself was crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, a good consistency overall. A “plain” funnel cake comes with a dousing of powdered sugar and tastes like it’s full of fat, but that’s not a bad thing.
The peach cobbler topping was not too sweet, so it balanced out the funnel cake well. The ice cream topping was a typical, full fat product you’d find at any local grocery store. Overall, toppings are a decent price at $1.75 for one.
Indoor and outdoor seating is offered, so there is plenty of space for their customers. However, the majority of the indoor seating is placed in a dark area of the shop. Window or outdoor seating are preferable since they allow you to get some sunlight and look out on the nearby nature. The furnishings are not welcoming, but that’s excusable since it’s a local shop.
FancY FunneL CakeS is a good local place that can satisfy your cravings for fried foods. The portions are big, so make sure to bring an appetite and some friends. Don’t expect spectacular decor, prices or service, but you can expect a great rendition of an American classic.
