Marvel’s superheroes already differ from the traditional American idea of a superhero. Varying from enraged monsters to iron-clad narcissists, they are some of the most beloved fictional characters. So, when it was announced that Marvel was making a movie about Deadpool – the “merc with a mouth” – the reaction was naturally very positive.
The movie Deadpool, released Feb. 12, follows Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), a Special Forces operative-turned-mercenary who is diagnosed with terminal cancer at a young age. A mysterious man approaches Wade with an offer to cure his cancer. At first, Wade is hesitant to accept this, but eventually he decides that he should take the treatment to save his girlfriend from seeing him struggle with his illness and eventually die.
This treatment, although effective in removing the cancer, leads to undesirable side effects. One such symptom is the destruction of Wade’s appearance, which makes him not want to see his girlfriend, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), in fear that she will reject him. However, the treatment also gave Wade the ability to regenerate after incurring any physical trauma.
Wade, after taking on the name “Deadpool”, tries to find the man that gave him the life-shattering treatment.
While his appearance may have been lost, Deadpool’s crude sense of humor and smart mouth certainly survived his procedure. His jokes, more often than not, are absolutely filthy, earning the movie a well deserved R-rating. However, the nature of Deadpool wouldn’t allow anything less.
While far from clean, the movie was absolutely hilarious and had a solid plot despite the comedy. The characters were well rounded and humanly imperfect.
The movie’s blend of comedy and action was well-executed, adding to the overall record breaking success of the movie; Deadpool had the most successful opening for an R-rated movie ever. The movie’s popular reception has already earned it a sequel.
Overall, Deadpool’s perfect mix of action and humor made the film an absolute joy to watch. During the experience, rarely a minute goes by without laughter. The movie is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys crude humor and is definitely the furthest possible thing from a family film.
