The Reality Behind the Runaway Dance Changes

One of the many activities Rocklin High hosts are school dances. Of course, every school has dances, but Rocklin is unique with its Runaway dance, which concludes Runaway Week. Runaway also features a spirit week where people can dress up according to the theme for that day. The Runaway dance is casual, unlike Homecoming, which is semi-formal.

The concept of Runaway Week is simple: Homecoming is coming home, while Runaway is running away from home. Runaway Week, unlike Homecoming, isn’t an event held at other schools. It’s unique to RHS.

Typically, dances are on Friday nights, unless it’s the Homecoming dance, Senior Ball or Junior Prom, which all take place on Saturdays. Due to a scheduling conflict with boys basketball, ASB was forced to reserve the gym on Saturday for the dance. Therefore, the 2016 Runaway dance is going to be held on Saturday night 1/9 instead of Friday night 1/8.

Because it is scheduled for Saturday night at 8 p.m., girls varsity basketball players have the option of going to the dance.

Girls varsity have a game on Friday 1/8, followed by a Delta Tournament on Saturday at Oak Ridge, meaning that they’re going to have three games on that day. Some are going to head straight home from El Dorado Hills, like senior Jordan Purvis. Others are going to go to the dance right after the game, like junior Nicole Cartan.

Nicole said, about the jam packed weekend, “It’s going to be rough, because we don’t have a day before to practice plays that the other team will run, but we’re good. We’re gonna do it and it’s going to be fantastic. I was happy when I heard the dance would be on Saturday because now I have the option of going, which is nice and I would miss the boy’s game to go to the dance.”

However, Jordan has a different view, “I’m not going because we have a game at Oak Ridge and, by the time after it’s done, I’ll be tired and I’ll most likely want to stay for the boy’s game and it’s about a 45 minute to an hour drive so it’s hard. It’s kind of a crazy week with the games and having no practice in between the games is hard, and we also have to coach little girls on Saturday morning, so the main reason why I’m not going to the dance is because I’d like to relax and just hang out after a long week.”
There is a benefit and a downfall to the game being on Saturday for the girls on the basketball team. While it gives them an opportunity to go, they would also be tired after a long week of practice and four games. Overall, however, the dance being moved to a Saturday is an adjustment that is welcomed by many.
