Rocklin High School has always had great excellence in both academic and athletics, and football is no exception. With an overall record of 10-3 and a league record of 4-2, Rocklin High is heading to Sacramento State for the SJS Division II finals. The last time Rocklin’s football team won a section title was in 2009.
#3 Rocklin will play #5 Del Oro for the title this Friday, Dec. 4 at 7:00 p.m. In their last meeting on Oct. 9, the Thunder stole the victory at Del Oro’s stadium in a 28-3 win. Players of the game included #5 Evyn Holtz (overall), #16 William Floyd (offensive), #21 Eric “kiko” Merino (defensive) and #87 Wesley Preece (special teams).
The Thunder is not doing anything out of the norm to prepare for Del Oro.
“We just do what we do every week, stay focused, practice hard, play physical and it translates into the game,” says senior Evyn Holtz.
Both teams have battled through the grueling Sierra Foothill League (SFL) and are motivated to finish strong at the end of the Sac Joaquin Section Division II playoffs.
Although both teams are very strong, Coach Benzel believes that Rocklin’s leadership and physicality will allow them to earn a victory against the Golden Eagles.
“There are more leaders on this team. Also we are all healthy. Last year we got decimated by injuries. And finally, our guys are very strong and physical,” says Coach Greg Benzel.
Even though Rocklin beat Del Oro earlier in the season, Rocklin’s players and coaches are still a little apprehensive.
“Del Oro is a different team than who we played earlier in the season. They have a lot of confidence built up from the playoffs, and they have battled just like us,” adds Coach Benzel.
However, they are still confident that they will get the win this Friday night.
“We are going to get the win, no matter what it takes. I am really excited, however I am a little nervous because I’ve never been on the line to win a section title. As long as we continue to be physical and leave it all out on the field we will be fine,” adds senior defensive end Chase Hatada.
This Friday night will be a battle for the ring!
