Dr. Bobs Donuts: Doing Donuts Right

Butylated hydroxytoluene? High fructose corn syrup? Tertiary Butylhydroquinone? These are just a few ingredients that your bowl of Cheerios contains. The Cheerios brand boasts that it holds twelve vitamins and minerals, may help lower the risk of heart disease, and that it isn’t made with genetically modified organisms. All of these claims are in fact, true. However, butylated hydroxytoluene is used in jet fuel, high fructose corn syrup can cause tissue damage and heart disease, and tertiary butylhydroquinone is used in the stabilization of explosive compounds.

Clean eating is becoming increasingly popular because of the dangerous long term effects of those unpronounceable words on your morning cereal box. Many of these extras are added to “preserve” and “enhance” the flavor and appearance of your food stuffs.

Dr. Bob’s Donuts strongly supports the clean-eating movement with their delicious and nutritious goodies. All of their goods are organic, vegan, low in sugar, gluten and dairy free, and low in calories.

Located at 336 Lincoln Street in Downtown Roseville, Dr. Bob’s Donuts inconspicuously boasts the world’s healthiest donuts. When I arrived at around 2 p.m. on a Sunday, the small business was surprisingly crowded. One employee was helping explain the Dr. Bob’s vision, working the counter, making more “donuts” (the dough is steamed rather than fried), and refilling the toppings.

I made my way through the tight knit crowd and built my “DoYo”. The only difference between the donuts and the doyo is that they’re topped with frozen yogurt made from coconut milk. I used a blueberry “scronut” (steamed donut with fruit imbedded in it) as my foundation and topped it with gourmet bourbon vanilla glaze, dairy free vanilla frozen yogurt, organic blueberries, organic pineapple, banana chia pudding, and honey oat granola made with organic honey.

Eating my customized creation was a wonderful experience. The donut didn’t get soggy at all; it had a melty, disintegrate-in-my-mouth feel and was delicious when eaten with the toppings. I love that I was able to eat something that’s genuinely good for the body while still enjoying the intermingling flavors of the product. Organic foods are usually costly, but my purchase was under 10 dollars. Overall, I had a superb experience with Dr. Bob’s Donuts and I do plan to return.
