Spider-Man is Finally an Avenger!
Spider-Man is, arguably, one of the best known Marvel characters. However, since 1999, Sony has owned the rights to Spider-Man films rather than Marvel Entertainment. Recently, though, Sony and Marvel have finally agreed to share the rights of this beloved character’s storyline.
About six months ago, emails between Marvel’s executive producer, Kevin Feige, and Sony execs were leaked, talking about an agreement between the two businesses over the web-slinger’s film persona. They made an official announcement last week that Spider-Man is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a new film on July 28, 2017.
What does this mean for Marvel? It means that we might see Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War and we’re getting a Spider-Man reboot. Again. This reboot, however, might not be about Peter Parker’s origins, but rather about after he became Spider-Man. Marvel has, in addition, said that they will hire a different actor for the movie.
While a reboot is exciting the first time, I feel that this is taking it too far. Even though Marvel would make a much better movie than Sony, another Spider-Man reboot would feel repetitive. The Spider-Man movies have just felt like the same story repeated over and over.
In addition to this, Marvel is going to have to push back four highly anticipated movies; Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and The Inhumans. These four movies are all very important to the overall story of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, as three are Avengers and the other two belong to the group known as the Inhumans, who interact with the Guardians of the Galaxy often.
Admittedly, this wouldn’t push back these movies too much, but it’s still a disappointment. I would rather have these heroes introduced to the cinematic universe, rather than seeing a new actor play in another Spider-Man movie. It’s a great thing that Marvel got the rights to their character, as now Spider-Man can finally branch out to interact with his superhero counterparts.
For now, however, we’ll all just have to wait and see what Marvel is going to do, and hope that it’s going to be amazing.
