Freshman Without 5th Period

Shayna Frink hears the bell ring, signaling the mass rush of students all heading to their fifth period classes. However, Frink doesn’t move with them. She walks off to the library and begins her homework in the air-conditioned quiet.

Frink, a freshman, doesn’t actually have a definite fifth period class. After injuring her leg a few weeks ago playing soccer, she transferred out and received an extended plus period during the time she would normally be in Mr. Muscarella’s fifth period P.E. 1 class. She either heads to the library or the P.E. classroom to begin her homework for the day.

“I broke my leg about three or four weeks ago playing indoor soccer… the girl kicked my ankle instead of the ball, and I ended up with a fractured plate and a severely sprained ankle.”

After she injured her leg, she was informed by her P.E. teacher and the RHS faculty that she would be unable to participate for the rest of this year and would have to retake her second semester of P.E. 1.

“It’s really irritating. Both the teachers and the administration insisted that I retake that semester, and I really didn’t want to.”

Frink isn’t only missing out on her P.E. class. Her ambitions of trying out for the spring play and running for the track team both had to be abandoned as well.

“The spring play has musical numbers which I can’t really do with a cast on my leg. The same goes for track. I wanted to try it, but I can’t now.”

Despite the difficulty, Frink is going to begin physical therapy soon, which will go through until her soccer season.

Her physical therapy will help her get out of the cast and back into the things she loves best.
