The Lego Movie

The Lego Movie

As someone who played with Lego sets for hours on end when I was younger, The Lego Movie easily caught my interest, and didn’t let it go.

Despite being a “kid’s movie,” it consisted mostly of sophisticated and intelligent humor that played to adult audiences much more than younger audiences. To me, it felt like any other major comedy – Anchorman 2, This Is The End, etc. The fast-paced, sometimes subtle humor and the cameos were not at all characteristic of a child’s film but of a blockbuster comedy.

The cast was made up mostly of comedy stars from various TV shows and movies, with cameos in nearly every other scene.

The story of the film is very mocking of society and was surprisingly quite original. It follows a group of heroes fighting the ruler of the Lego world. The film also delves into the different types of people who build Lego sets, and how they use the instructions.

One of my favorite aspects of the movie was the incredible animation quality. At first glance, it looked exactly like stop-motion. However, the animators managed to pull off this look without actually going through the tedious process of filming a feature-length stop-motion movie. The detail work was remarkable, every little bit of each lego piece was displayed perfectly. If you look close enough you can even see fingerprints on some of the pieces.

The lighting also served to create an incredible atmosphere, and, subtle as it was, helped tie the film together.

There is very little to complain about with this movie, but if I were to mention anything, it would be the fact that some of the moments near the end of the movie felt pretty cliche and typical. Other than that, my only qualm is that it was so fast-paced and filled with comedy that I will probably have to see it again to catch all of the jokes.

The Lego Movie did not at all fit its expectation of being a kid-focused movie. Between the cameos, the fast pacing, the incredible animation, and the smart and thoughtful humor, this was easily the best movie so far this year, and will definitely be a contender for the best movie of 2014.
