Seussical the Musical

With the main story arcs of Horton Hears a Who, Horton Hatches the Egg, and The One Feather Tail of Gertrude McFuzz, Rocklin High’s Seussical the Musical incorporates the stories we all love from Dr. Seuss, glow-in-the-dark musical numbers, and energetic casts that make the room feel like they are a part of the Seuss world.

Starting out strong with the musical number “Oh the Thinks You Can Think”, we jump right into the Seussian world with the Cat in the Hat, who becomes our narrator, and a boy that starts to think of the many things you can do – which include being in the Jungle of Nool with Horton the elephant, who protects a clover with the memorable saying “a person’s a person, no matter how small”.

Unfortunately, Horton ends up losing the clover – thus beginning his journey. To add a subplot to this arc, Gertrude, Horton’s neighbor, who only has one feather on her tail is trying to get Horton’s attention. This is the main arc of the musical and it’s here that we get introduced to some of the charismatic characters along our journey: Horton, Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie Bird, and The Sour Kangaroo.

From here, it’s a hop, skip, and a jump to the secondary plot of Whoville with Jojo, the mayor’s son, and his adventures. Now, picture a pink clover, then picture a tiny spec of dust on top of that clover, almost so small that you can’t even see it. That’s Whoville; it may be small, but Jojo seems to think his way into all sorts of situations that have monstrously big consequences for him. Here, we get to see the rest of the characters: Jojo, Mayor of Whoville, Mrs. Mayor, General Schmitz, and the Grinch.

Now, what could complete the entire “think of the strangest things” concept of the Seuss world? Circus McGurcus of course! It’s this circus that reveals: Solla Solew, a magical world that everyone wishes they could be in, the fact that Horton is stuck between a rock and a hard place (he can’t leave the egg he was given by Mayzie, but he also needs to find his clover and protect Whoville) and some happy endings that lead us up to the finale.

Will Jojo find his way through the tough times? Will Mayzie come to her senses and take the egg back? How about Gertrude and her affections – will they be recognized and returned in full? But mainly, will Horton find his clover again, keep it safe and maybe, even possibly, teach us all some lessons found in Dr. Seuss’s books? Go see the show – it’s friendly to all ages and both casts are a joy to watch!
