RHS girls grasp title

With the ongoing competition between girls and boys, Rocklin High School’s girls won the battle in 2012-2013 athletics coming out on top.

For the third time in twenty years, the RHS girls athletics received the Overall SFL Title, also called the All SFL Championship.  In the 2012-2013 season, the RHS girls had three league titles in women’s golf, soccer and softball, the most in the SFL with Granite Bay behind just three points.

“I think they were successful because they were a talented group that committed themselves to improving as a team.  They bought into the team philosophy of putting the team before themselves,” athletic director Mr. Davis Stewart said.

In order to obtain this award, the girls had to work extremely hard and have remarkable dedication to their sports.  With homework, family, friends and sports everyday, balancing everything is extremely difficult, but the girls found a way to keep improving both athletically and academically which is just as important.

Maddie Wuelfing, a current senior from the softball team was taking two AP classes and two Honors classes on top of her sport.  With a lot on her plate, it was difficult for her to stay motivated.

“Sometimes, I wonder how I managed it because I had a lot going on, but I think that organization and time management helped me.  What motivated me the most was my competition with myself.  I have a goal to be the best I can be and that is what drives me when I am stressed,” said Maddie, future Yale student-athlete.

Maddie’s self-determination and drive was very similar to the other athletes on the winning teams.  All of the girls shared a common goal to want to be their best, not only for themselves, but to better the team as a whole.  With this kind of mindset so common in a team, it is no wonder why there were three league championships.

The boys also had a good athletic program 2012-2013.  Although they did not win the All SFL Title, they did well and placed fourth.

This year, the female athletes are carrying the success with women’s water polo and golf, who both won league titles undefeated.  Women’s volleyball took second, and tennis and cross country took third.  They boys teams are doing great, with the football team took second, and it looks like the athletic programs are well on their way.

With all this success, it will be a tough to clinch the title of the ongoing battle between the boys and the girls.  Buckle up.
