Zendaya Shakes it Up

Disney’s latest star breaks out of her disney image with a new single

Zendaya Shakes it Up

The common stigma of a Disney singer is that they’re either a complete flop, auto-tuned, or they tend to go crazy trying to shed their Disney image, a la Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato. The next Disney darling trying to throw off her Disney image is Zendaya, star of the show “Shake It Up” on Disney Channel, and she does a wonderful job of mixing herself with her character.

Her single, “Replay,” dropped on July 16th of this year. And I’m not going to lie, I’m pleasantly surprised by it. It’s a perfect showing of the innocence of first love with a nice, mature sound that’s completely commendable for such a young artist.

The typical Disney diva’s first solo track debut is either boring, cheesy, or a complete departure from their character on their show. Zendaya, however, stays true to her spunky character on Shake It Up, Rocky Blue. The song itself is a dance-y, Black-Eyed Peas-esque beat, and she sings with such a passion that it’s obvious she’s dedicated.

The chorus is catchy and repetitive, but not in a bad or an annoying way. It could definitely be used as a dance track, and probably qualifies as dance or pop.

Overall, I’m impressed with her track. It wasn’t the best song I’ve ever heard, but for a Disney-less debut, I’m happily satisfied with her single.
