Captain Phillips Review
Right now Captain Phillips is one of the biggest movies in the country, and for good reason. A true story combined with excellent acting make this film a must-see.
Captain Phillips follows the story of Richard Phillips, captain of a ship that was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009. After the crew summoned the Navy and fought the pirates in whatever ways they could, the pirates took Phillips onto a lifeboat and held him hostage until a team of Navy Seals executed the pirates and rescued the captain.
The film is also surrounded by a cloud of controversy concerning the crew’s accounts of what happened, which may be affected by the law suit they have against the shipping company. While the crew may not think it portrays an accurate depiction of the events that occurred, the director of the film explained that while small details were changed in order to create a more entertaining movie, but everything else was as accurate as it could be.
I really enjoyed the movie. Tom Hanks played the protagonist Richard Phillips, and his performance was incredible. Specifically in a scene at the very end of the movie where Phillips is in shock, Hanks’s acting was amazing. He beautifully portrayed the stress of a pirate attack throughout the entire film.
Though the main character is obviously Phillips, the four pirates who attacked the ship and held him hostage played a very significant part of the story. Each one had a very comprehensive character and played a big role in the events of the attack.
I was also impressed by the depiction of the Navy Seal team that resolved the conflict. Along with negotiation tactics, the Seals used a synchronized display of deadly precision and incredible skill to rescue Phillips.
Overall this was a good movie, but the acting of Tom Hanks pushed the film into a higher status. Captain Phillips is an amazing movie and definitely worth seeing.
