Faculty Follies Brings Students to Tears

Ten years ago, a few RHS faculty members came up with the idea of raising money for student scholarships by putting on a show that showcases the staff and what goes on at school. This event came to be known as Faculty Follies and is usually put on mid-winter. This year, the show occurred on January 21 with two show times, one at 6 p.m. and another at 8 p.m.

This year, the show started out differently than what is usually introduced. The past few years, the show has started out with a video that is made by a group of the male social studies teachers. This time, however, it started out with the faculty singing school parodies of Disney songs.

Following the opening was a new segment, Mean Tweets, where social studies teachers read mean tweets about themselves, alluding to the famous videos of celebrities reading insulting tweets about themselves. While they claimed that the tweets were actual student tweets, the teachers were the ones who had come up with them.

Another new part of the show were the Lip-Sync Battles. The first one started out with physics teacher Mr. Clarion versus chemistry teacher Mr. Werner. Other battles were usually in groups, however, and they put on a show with matching costumes for their performances.

And, of course, some of the segments upheld tradition. The Hip Hop Ladies came together once again and danced to a mash-up of older songs from the 90’s and the early 2000’s with matching neon outfits.

For the “intermission” of sorts, Mr. O’Donnell and Mr. Spears hosted a game show that pitted students against teachers in a showdown to see who knew the others’ culture better. This was a new game and it seemed to be a success, although some of the audience was easily frustrated when some of the students couldn’t get an answer right.

The first showing ended with Mr. Clarion trying to fit himself into a big blue ball, and narrowly succeeded. However, the second showing was not lucky enough to see this act.

Overall, the show this year was an enjoyable experience full of jokes that were cleverly constructed and perfectly executed. Next year’s show has a lot to live up to.
