Hozier: Successful and Brilliant

Hozier: Successful and Brilliant

Aleah Schotsal

Born in Ireland, Hozier grew up the son of a local blues musician. Growing up, he attended St. Gerard’s School and continued to Trinity College, where he began studying music. Dropping out mid-year, he then recorded demos for Universal Music. From 2007 to 2012, he became involved with the Trinity Orchestra and toured internationally to areas such as Norway and the Netherlands.

In September of 2013, Irish singer-songwriter Andrew Hozier-Byrne released Take Me To Church, a controversial song about the relationship between Russia and the views on the LGBT community. A year later, his album Hozier was released with the debut single and many more jazz-rock themed songs that shook listeners to the bone with emotion.

From the top of the charts with a song to the top of the charts with an album, this so called one-hit-wonder showed his impressive talents would not go unrecognized. Each opening chord is strung with the beginning of a story just waiting to be listened to.

With this favored modern day blues album, he received a nomination for a Grammy, performed at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2014, Saturday Night Live, Late Night with Seth Meyers and the 2014 Billboard Music Awards.

On November 12 in 2015, Hozier continued to be idolized and received the VH1 Artist of the Year award based on fan votes. From slower, guitar filled songs like Cherry Wine to more fast-paced songs such as Jackie and Wilson, there’s no wonder as to why this album flew off the shelves everywhere.

“I am a politically motivated person, and that will come through in the music. I’m not sure if every song will be Take Me To Church, but I can only hope that people enjoy the body of work that I have ahead of me,” Hozier said about his album Hozier.

Flying past various musical artists with his originality and rich taste in music, he has left a mark on all who have listened to his album. With booming drums and a gospel infused choir, Hozier relies on the realism of the world to inspire his music, which leaves us with an enlightened view on our own existence.
