We’ve survived the Murder House, left the Asylum sane, been bewitched by the Coven and attended the Freak Show. Now American Horror Story fans are checking into the Hotel. On Oct 7, the season premier of American Horror Story: Hotel, aired for the first time.

As usual, the first episode of American Horror Story gave us a basic idea of what the show will be about, yet left us confused and yearning for more. This season of American Horror Story takes place at the Cortez Hotel in Los Angeles, home to many malevolent spirits and, quite possibly, creatures.

In the first season of American Horror Story: Murder House, there is a mysterious character dressed in a black latex bondage suit referred to as the Rubber Man that wanders throughout the house. American Horror Story: Hotel has created a similar character that appears to be covered in a wax-like skin called the Addiction Demon. Ryan Murphy, creator of AHS, has definitely succeeded in creating one of the most disturbing creatures in the show.

The Addiction Demon took part in one of the show’s most disturbing and controversial scenes in its history. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ryan Murphy himself even said that it was the “most disturbing scene” he has ever filmed. In the scene there is a violent rape between the Addiction Demon and a drug junkie played by Max Greenfield. This was definitely up there as one of the most unsettling scenes I have ever witnessed in the show.

Before the fifth installment of American Horror Story went on air, there was a buzz about Grammy winner singer Lady GaGa being on the show and Emmy award winning actress Jessica Lange not making an appearance in this season, according to Buzzfeed News, later confirmed by Murphy. Jessica Lange for the past four seasons of American Horror Story has always played a huge role, flawlessly, I might add. The show without Jessica Lange certainly gave off a different vibe.

With Jessica Lange gone, Murphy needed to act fast to replace her and draw attention to the show. His solution was to introduce Lady GaGa. When I heard this, I was at first skeptical. After all, this was Lady GaGa’s first big acting debut and it seemed to be a publicity stunt pulled by Murphy, but I was pleasantly surprised. In the show, Lady GaGa plays a vampire-esque and ruthless character referred to as the Countess who is implied to rule the hotel.

Overall, the future of the fifth season of American Horror Story looks promising as GaGa delivers a convincing performance, and the storylines of the show continue to be strong.
